Women in Hindu Culture
In this project, I have undertaken the exploration of certain Hindu cultural
beliefs in the context of my expanded awareness of the possibilities for women.
The main body of work centers on the Hindu woman’s married life. I am interested
in visually representing the process leading up to marriage, the significance of
the husband in the women’s life, and her change in status if she looses him.
Hindu culture is very ceremonial and visually rich. The finer details and the
vibrant colors associated with the Hindu culture are easier to express through
images. However, I aim to move beyond documentation of the ceremony to express
my view on the subject.
Although I acknowledge that cultural difference will be a factor in the
interpretation of my work, I am more concerned with this work as the end project
of my self-exploration and soul searching as a Hindu women and young artist.
